Boat with recycled plastic bottles
In making aDIY boatwith plastic bottles, remember to always use as many floats (bottles) as possible so as to guarantee buoyancy even in case of collisions or damage.
Plastic bottles should be grouped together and tied tightly. In the raft above the bottles were tied together in groups of 9 to form many support rectangles. In other cases, the bottles can be tied together in groups of 19 to form hexagons.
How to fix the bottles together? No glue!
Use string and tape to secure the individual bottles together. To fix the obtained floats together (rectangular or hexagonal) you must use "wooden cores" and a very light metal mesh. The "cores" are given by wooden rods long enough to penetrate all the floats provided on the same line and must be narrow enough to make space between one bottle and another without changing the structure of the float (hexagon or rectangle). The metal mesh will externally enclose the various floats.
Summarizing what has been said so far:
- the bottles are grouped to form single floating units.
- The bottles are fastened together with string and scotch tape.
- The individual units are fixed together with wooden rods placed internally and a metal mesh placed externally.
If units of 9 bottles were used, a single wooden strip would suffice. In case of single units of 19 plastic bottles, three strips should be used. The strips have the task of fixing the bottles together but also of perfectly aligning the individual floats obtained.
The floating base must be associated with a support structure capable of allowing the crew to navigate. In addition to the use of wooden pallets, it is possible to use transverse beams and boards fixed together.
The floating component (the bottles) must be fixed to the wooden support structure using the electrician string and clamps. Electrician zip ties are also useful for fixing wire mesh.
The bow floating units will have to be lined with plastic (garbage bags can be used) while the stern floating units can be scaled on two levels in order to create a tip able to better cut through the water.
