Sibillini Mountains National Park, a park that protects the mountains that give it name and fame, but not only. This protected area extends further and acts as a bridge between the eastern side and the western side of the boot. This transitional placement offers an unimaginable variety of landscapes and a unique wealth also at the level of fauna and plant heritage. Just to mention a few possible encounters, those with the wolf, with a'Golden Eagle, with chamois, with the wild cat. I don't wish you the one with the viper, rather with a sympathetic finch.
Monti Sibillini National Park: where it is located
The Monti Sibillini National Park it extends between the regions of Marche and Umbria and involves four provinces: Ascoli Piceno, Fermo, Macerata and Perugia. L'Sibillini Mountains National Park Authority it is based in Visso and is responsible for all 71,437 hectares of the park. These are mainly mountainous surfaces, with the limestone massif of the Apennines dominating.
But let's not imagine a landscape full of edges and peaks. On the contrary, the softer forms of the park almost always accompany us on our visit to this park.Tuscan-Emilian area. Wanting to divide the boot vertically, for once, and thus also acting on the Sibillini Mountains National Park, its eastern side is characterized by numerous valley floors of rivers and streams that know how to surprise visitors with glimpses of narrow and impressive gorges.
The Gorges of the Infernaccio, for example, which are fascinating only from the name. At high altitudes there are many beech woods, but passing to the western side, the landscape softens and our eyes can slide gently towards Umbria, encountering, if lucky, the beautiful area of Plans of Castelluccio.
To reach the Sibillini Mountains National Park by train the reference railway stations are Macerata, Tolentino, Foligno, Spoleto Ascoli, Piceno Porto, San Giorgio / Fermo. For those who prefer the bus, there are different bus lines in the province of Macerata (CONTRAM), in the province of Perugia (UMBRIA MOBILITA ') and in the provinces of Ascoli Piceno and Fermo (START, STEAT and MADEBUS). If you really can only use the car, we have three alternatives: the A14 (North Civitanova Marche exits; East Pedaso, Porto San Giorgio; South S. Benedetto del Tronto), the A1 (Orte, Val di Chiana exits) or the Statali 4 Salaria, 77 Val di Chienti, 78 Picena and 209 Valnerina.
Monti Sibillini National Park: video

Monti Sibillini National Park: paths
Those who can and want to fully enjoy the beauty of Sibillini Mountains National Park he has numerous possibilities to choose how to walk, but he must walk. It is not an obligation, of course, but an advice, on my part, and a duty almost towards so much nature ready to reveal itself in the eyes of those who do not live in close contact every day.
It is not necessarily necessary to go into too wild areas, for example there are the urban paths that connect the various medieval corners of the inhabited communities scattered at the foot of the Sibillini Mountains. Excellent for those who want to combine naturalistic interests with a passion for architecture, art and history. There are the nature trails, then: a perfect compromise for types who want to dive yes in the heart of the park but they don't do it out of habit, so it's good that they don't go too far.
These paths make us discover the Sibillini starting from the historical centers of the villages but then letting ourselves go to the discovery of uncontaminated landscapes where fauna and flora reign. Of the 18 nature trails proposed, two are "for everyone", even for strollers or wheelchairs, the others are also suitable for Sunday hikers. More demanding and wild, “tough” itineraries finally lead us to the most isolated peaks, but often require experience, training and suitable equipment.
If we feel like it, we can take them alone or with our pawing group, there is still the possibility of relying on the official guides of the Sibillini Mountains National Park. For those arriving in the Sibillini Mountains National Park and wants an unforgettable experience, here it is: the Great Ring of the Sibillini, 124 km of well-marked hikes to be completed in nine days. A challenge, an adventure, a temptation.
Monti Sibillini National Park: Visso, Montefortino and San Ginesio
These three destinations are good advice for anyone who is still bewildered by the beauty of Sibillini Mountains National Park. To reach Visso you take a path that crosses towns, making you touch the walls of the houses to be amazed in front of the coats of arms of the portals imagining a past that, studied at school, did not seem so special.
After a look from the top of the Colle della Torre we arrive at the small but suggestive village of Visso, at the intersection of five valleys. Here we also find the Information Point and the headquarters of theSibillini Mountains National Park Authority, the Sibyl's Botanical Garden.
Montefortino it can be reached by an equally picturesque path, with fascinating colors ranging from the green of the holm oaks and the beech to the scarlet red of the scotano, up to the orange of the maples, if we are in autumn. Once in the village, we will find the Casa del Parco, the Fortunato Duranti, the diocesan museum of sacred art and the Sibillini wildlife museum.
Also San Ginesio is one of the destinations that most attracts visitors to the Sibillini Mountains National Park and you get there through a fascinating and evocative coppice, at times uncontaminated, at times characterized by a human but graceful touch, with the presence of farms and desired but now secular forests.
Monti Sibillini National Park: interactive map
There are not only the three destinations that I have described to you, they are just three examples among hundreds of possibilities that we can clearly see by looking at the map. It is interactive so we can not only observe but also dream and take action to organize a trip to the Sibillini Mountains National Park.
Monti Sibillini National Park: flora and fauna
Both the flora and the fauna of the Sibillini Mountains National Park they are very particular and surprisingly varied for a not particularly large area such as that protected in this circumstance. In addition to changing from region to region, from slope to slope, vegetation is also linked to altitude. Up to about 1000 meters, we find oak woods, hornbeam and ash, beyond we have the mixed beech woods and then as well.
Overcoming 1700-1750 meters we must surrender to the pastures which, however, give us very rare and precious species such as the genepì of the Apennines, the Edelweiss of the Apennines and the Viola eugeniae. Venturing into the scree with thought, the flora that can be imagined includes a rare species, the Carex disticha which, in Pian Grande, has one of its only two Italian stations.
The fauna of the Sibillini Mountains National Park it is equally interesting and does not lack "goodies" to discover while walking through the mountains. There are the usual known mammals such as the wolf, the elusive wild cat, the porcupine and the roe deer. The Deer and the Chamois have been reintroduced and join the merry company.
Among the birds I would mention my beloved Golden Eagle, but also the sparrow hawk, the eagle owl, the alpine finch and the wallcreeper. There are many others, however, and also of reptiles Sibillini Mountains National Park he is rich, including the Ursini viper. Among the invertebrates, the Marchesoni's chirocephalus stands out, endemic to lake of Pilate.
