Floating parquet or glued parquet, this is the dilemma! Let's find out together the advantages and disadvantages of interlocking or glued parquet flooring.

The laying of floating parquet is still very undervalued in our country: seven times out of ten, theparquetcomesgluedto the floor and not interlocking. Yet thedry laying of thefloating parquetit is very simple and has many advantages. On this page we will analyze the advantages and disadvantages ofparquetinterlocking laid (or floating parquet) and bonded parquet. To help your choice, we invite you to read the articles:

Floating or glued parquet, advantages and disadvantages

Theglued parquethas the advantage of being quieter but this is not an exclusive advantage of theglued parquet: thefloating parquet,if laid with special mats, it can offer the same levels of silence as glued parquet.

If your doubts are about noise, be aware that multilayer wooden parquet absorbs much more noise than laminate. Laminate parquet is louder to footsteps and creaks.

If you have underfloor heating, you can take advantage of bothfloating parquetbe thatglued. Always with mattresses that absorb noise, you get a good thermal efficiency so that there is no gap betweendry or glued laying. In fact, parquet is generally not recommended for those with underfloor heating but the only precaution is to choose wooden slats with a thickness of less than 15 - 16 mm.

The nylon sheets needed as a vapor barrier (especially for those who lay the interlocking parquet on the ground floor) do not act as thermal insulation and are therefore irrelevant in the case of underfloor heating.

The thickness required by thefloating parquetis higher than required

The difference in costs between theinterlocking parquetand the glued one is in the manpower: the interlocking parquet is laid much more easily (even with DIY) with less labor times. In the case of glued parquet it will be necessary to bear the costs of the glue while in the case of floating parquet it will be necessary to purchase a sound-absorbing mat that allows good heat transmission in case of underfloor heating. The installation costs are equivalent if we rely on a professional installer, however, those who choose do-it-yourself can save a lot by purchasing a floating parquet. To understandhow to lay dry parquetwith the DIY we invite you to read our guide "laying the floating parquet".

One aspect to consider when choosing thefloating parquetit is the presence of joints, which if the installation is done with a careless DIY, could penalize the final aesthetic effect; however, if you choose laths with dedicated hooking (click interlocking and non male-female interlocking), not only is the installation easier but the use of joints is reduced. In the image below you can see the boards of a floating parquet dry laid with intelligent interlocking able to reduce the use of joints and facilitate the do-it-yourself installation. This interlocking system is calleduniclic multifit.

Betweenadvantagesof thefloating parquet with dry jointwe remind you that the operations for replacing the strips, in the event of any failures, are simpler and more:

  • the use of chemical adhesives is avoided, reducing domestic pollution and the impact on the health of the inhabitants.
  • The floating parquet does not damage the underlying floor, convenient if you live in a rented apartment and in the future you are forced to restore the original state of the floor. Also useful for preserving a valuable floor.
  • Floating parquet is particularly suitable for damp screeds.
  • Floating parquet is not very demanding and with careful installation it can also be used on imperfect screeds.
