Bonsai, irrigation and careto be allocated to the plant. How much water to give to a bonsai and how often to wet the soil and roots. How to take care of a bonsai to keep the crown and root system in balance.

Thebonsaiis a plant that has undergone a process ofminiaturization. While the structure of the plant (trunk and crown) are in miniature, the fruits and flowers are born of the original size, creating contrasts with a remarkable aesthetic effect.

The most common reason for the failure of thecultivation of bonsaiit is the lack of opportuneirrigations. If the water is not administered in the appropriate manner and frequency, the bonsai will eventually die.

Bonsai and water:if the soil dries out too quickly

Remember to also pay attention to the water absorption times: the soil must be able to retain the liquid! If the soil is completely occupied by the roots, it will not be able to absorb water and the soil will dry out too cold, in this case you mustrepotting the bonsaias soon as possible. Repotting bonsai is the most delicate operation of all the cultivation of these small plants. To perform it in the best way, read our guide available on the pageBonsai, repotting and advice.

How to take care of the Bonsai:when to irrigate

At the time ofirrigatea plant we should first assess the condition of the soil. This advice is valid for thecultivation of bonsaias well as for any other species.

With your fingers, test the ground by penetrating half a centimeter: wet only if the ground, just below the surface, is dry.

Bonsai should be watered three times!

Sprinkle the water with a professional watering can: these watering cans have a long neck and a terminal siphon capable of simulating the effect of a very thick rain. Professional watering cans are quite expensive, for growing bonsai you can choose a small sprinkler, the only condition is that it is able to return a dense water jet. Personally I bought a watering can with a capacity of 0.7 liters, not professional but with a very long spout that does its duty well: it is excellent for irrigate bonsai!

With rain, it will be necessary to wet both the vegetation and the foot of the plant. Wait and let it drain. After a few minutes, repeat the operation and wait for the time necessary for a first outflow of the water.

It will be necessary to wet again a third time and only at this point, if the first irrigations have been correct, will you notice some drops flowing away from the drain hole.

Bonsai, irrigation and water stagnation

Therecultivation of bonsairequires the utmost commitment even in the seemingly most obvious principles such as irrigation and plant position.

If there is one thing that bonsai fears, it is water stagnation. On the market, you can find containers with feet that, in addition to giving a beautiful appearance to the plant, raise the pot from the collection plate below. Pots with legs are useful because stagnation, more than drought, is feared bycultivation of bonsai. With the rise, the excess water will not risk being reabsorbed by the drain holes.

Bonsai, ideal location

Avoidgrow bonsaibetween shelves and bookcases: in these conditions the bonsai will receive light only on one side, creating an uneven growth and suffering to the plant.

Choose a position that can provide light over the entire plant. Better if the light is more abundant (and therefore direct) in the morning or in the evening, avoiding direct exposure in the hottest hours of the day. The photosynthetic apparatus must always be placed in favorable conditions for the production of nutrients to support thecultivation of the plant.
