Plantain: here are the benefits of regular consumption of this extraordinary food rich in beneficial and therapeutic properties.

Very similar to the banana, the plantain is a very appreciated fruit in South American gastronomy; it is grown in Africa, South America and the Caribbean, and it begins to be imported more and more regularly.

It can be deep green, yellow or black, depending on the stage of ripeness reached. Compared to traditional bananas, it has a thicker and harder skin and white pulp that oxidizes quickly in contact with the air

It can be prepared in many ways: boiled, steamed in the oven or fried. It is a very versatile food in the kitchen therefore it lends itself to the creation of multiple dishes. You can prepare soups and mashed potatoes, it should be considered like potatoes if it is unripe. If, on the other hand, the plantain is ripe it should be used for sweet preparations as it becomes extremely sweet.

The plantain is also dried and then ground for transformation into flour. Plantain flour is rich in protein, fiber and carbohydrates. Mixed with water or milk, it is used to feed small children in the regions of southern India.

From a nutritional point of view, the plantain includes a high amount of micronutrients; contains fiber, minerals, vitamin C and beta-carotene.

In addition to ensuring a large amount of energy to the body, it also brings numerous benefits to the health of our body. A medium-sized plantain can have around 400 mg of potassium. If you consider that the estimated amount for an adult is 4700 mg, the consumption of this extraordinary fruit offers a great daily intake

Improve and regulate heart rhythm

Due to its high potassium content, plantain can regulate heart rhythm. It helps the body regulate blood pressure by protecting the heart from damage caused by arrhythmias.

Against gastritis and other problems associated with the stomach

The plantain contains a large amount of starches, great protectors of the gastric mucosa. For this reason, it is a food particularly suitable for those suffering from gastritis or acidity.

In these cases, it must be prepared properly, avoiding frying it since the fats that are used for cooking, would cancel all the positive effects on health. The ideal would be to consume it boiled and with a little salt and olive oil to flavor it.

Against diseases

Thanks to the presence of numerous molecules with anti-oxidant action, regular consumption of plantain helps prevent the onset of certain diseases caused by excessive oxidative stress, such as cancer and cardiovascular diseases.

It should be included in your diet, especially after antibiotic treatment to strengthen the immune system. It is now well known that antibiotics weaken the intestinal bacterial flora.

Against hypertension

As we have already mentioned, plantain contains potassium, an essential micronutrient for the health of the body. Its regular consumption, not only benefits the arteries, but also promotes the process of contraction of the myocardial muscle, a very important factor in the case of the heart.

When you suffer from hypertension, the best thing to do is to increase the intake of potassium, magnesium and calcium.

Against obesity

The starches contained in the plantain give a prolonged feeling of satiety. After eating this fruit, in fact, you will feel full for a long time. Those who want to lose weight can therefore include it in their diet, albeit in moderate quantities

It is important to know that this tropical fruit can be harmful if it is eaten in large quantities by people suffering from diabetes, due to the high percentage of glycides it contains.
