Luffa vegetable sponge, completely vegetable, does not center with the marine sponges because it is obtained by drying the vegetable that bears the same name: hard to go wrong! There Luffa vegetable belongs to the family of Cucurbitaceae and if its existence is not known, it can be mistaken for a normal courgette. Nothing bad, fortunately, since it is edible, plus, alternatively, we can use it to produce a natural sponge. Usually the variety of Cilindrica, or Aegyptica, is used for this second purpose.
Luffa: how to make it
If we want to start from the beginning, we cultivate the Luffa from seeds, in pots, to obtain the fruits to be harvested and dried in order to obtain them in the simplest and most comfortable way possible the seeds, on the one hand, and the pulp, on the other. The latter can then also be colored, obviously using natural substances.
There sponge is obtained from the pulp which, once dry, becomes a kind of fibrous tissue almost made on purpose to rub the skin or floors and other surfaces in the house. It replaces the other sponges, those of animal or synthetic origin, without making us regret.
To pass from the dried fruit to the sponge it is necessary to peel it, however, otherwise you will not get the fibrous and elastic consistency you need and which makes the loofah comparable to other sponges.
While being of oriental origins, the plant is now widespread and cultivated in Italy as in other European countries. Especially those with a climate similar to ours because it is a species that is well suited to a warm climate like what it is found in Sicily and Sardinia.
Although it has settled very well in Italy, its foreign origins remain in the sound of the name, as it should be. It comes from the term Arabic "Louff".
It is not difficult to find the loofah seeds on the market to grow seedlings in your garden. Once the vegetable is obtained, it is less simple to continue with the preparation of the vegetable sponge which requires patience and skill and not just the classic green thumb.
Who does not find the seeds or does not want to start from scratch for then use the loofah as a sponge, you can very well buy it ready for use. It can be found in shops selling organic and natural products in the department dedicated to home or personal care, or in some herbalists.
I tried to buy the loofah as a natural sponge even at those fairs or markets that host only organic products. We can also find various types of loofah sponges, all natural but to be used for different purposes.
