Monosodium glutamate, difficult name to pronounce for a substance that it would be better to avoid ingesting. It certainly cannot be considered natural and beneficial, it is not poison but it arouses perplexity in many. That it can become so in the long run is still to be ascertained, there are conflicting opinions that it is better to know.

Monosodium glutamate: where it is found

Like the sodium salt of glutamic acid and as a natural amino acid, the Monosodium glutamate it is present in almost all foods, especially if they are rich in protebins. Therefore meat, fish and dairy products contain high quantities of this substance, but also present in some vegetables. If we think about the monosodium glutamate used by the food industry, it is clear that it is not natural at all.

Monosodium glutamate: what it is

It is a food additive used in the industrial sector with the aim of making packaged foods tastier. It is also used for the preparation of bouillon cubes, vegetable or meat cubes.

To make sure of its presence, we just need to read the labels of what we buy, which should be done automatically, always, and not just to know whether or not there is Monosodium glutamate.

If out of pure curiosity we read a bit of it, passing through the shelves of a supermarket, we realize that this additive is "added" in more food than we think. Many experts believe that its consumption is somehow linked to obesity, food intolerances and allergies and some very serious degenerative diseases.

Monosodium glutamate: foods

Extensive use of this additive is made in the food industry because monosodium glutamate it is one of the best ingredients that allow without too much raising the costs to give flavor to foods that do not have any. Or that they had it but, with various treatments, they lost it. Of course, it is clear that the quality of the result is not excellent from the point of view of the qualities and organoleptic characteristics of the packaged foods that come out rich in Monosodium glutamate and low in nutrients, even if they seem tasty.

The Glutamate tricks the taste buds. To date, according to EUfic, it is a harmless substance and no limits of intake or recommended quantities are indicated. However, there are different opinions and studies that undermine these "certainties".

Monosodium glutamate: it hurts and is carcinogenic

The enemies of the Monosodium glutamate claim that, as an artificial additive, produced in a completely industrial way. That it hurts and that it is carcinogenic, it is all to be proved, but when in doubt we can begin to understand how indispensable in our kitchen, Monosodium glutamate.

It is in many trading dice, but no one forbids us to use homemade dice, by us, or proposed by some zero-mile realities that are often more trusted. We find this additive in many industrial foods and if we try to feed ourselves less than prepackaged products, it is only good. Not just in regards to the doses of Monosodium glutamate.

Monosodium glutamate and Chinese restaurant syndrome

We often hear about Chinese restaurant syndrome and it is not meant to be a racist or prejudiced stereotype. However, it may happen that when you eat in low-quality Chinese restaurants, shortly after you feel symptoms that correspond to those of an "overdose" of Monosodium glutamate.

One would think that it was among the ingredients of the meal just eaten. It is not proven but the correspondence exists, the symptoms that cast these doubts are headache and redness, up to real asthma attacks, which could be otherwise related to allergy cases.
